Be the Bridge: Reparations and Social Justice

In 1968, near the end of his like, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., made the case for reparations for Black Americans, and people of African descent more broadly. He proclaimed that America had enriched itself by enslaving Black people for 246 years, and virtually enslaving them, through a system of “Jim Crow” segregation, for another 100 years. King believed that this transgeneratonal theft of Black earnings and wealthy, these dehumanizing and sinful acts of greed and violence, call for atonement and reparation. “Now, when we come to Washington in this campaign,” he declared, “we are coming to get our check.” This guest sermon, by Dr. Matthew C. Whitaker, will illuminate King’s call, tether it to scripture (Luke 19:1-10), the current Black Lives Matters Movement, and the possibility of America’s reclamation.
