As things heat up during this political season, and as temperatures continue to rise, Diamond Strategies recommends that we pause and reflect upon positive aspects of our past and present, that may help cool us down and illuminate our way forward.
“National Museum of African American History and Culture Recognizes the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington”
"The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) invites visitors to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington by experiencing Luther King Jr.’s 'I Have a Dream Speech' on loan from Villanova University for a limited time, Aug. 7–Sept. 18, in the 'Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom' gallery. The museum also offers three compelling exhibitions: 'Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation 1876–1968,' 'Making a Way Out of No Way' and 'A Changing America' that shares the story about the March on Washington. More information about the March on Washington is available on the museum’s website. 'At the National Museum of African American History and Culture, sited at the foot of the Washington Monument, the meaning and purpose of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom persists today,' said Kevin Young, the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture." Read more HERE.
“July is Social Awareness Month: Here is Your Social Awareness Toolkit”
"From the time you’re born, your relationships help you learn to navigate the world. Positive social habits can help you build support systems and stay healthier mentally and physically. Flip each card below for checklists on how to improve your health in each area. Click on the images to read articles about each topic. You can also print the checklists separately or all together to share with others or as a reminder to yourself." Read more HERE.
July is Disability Pride Month
"Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July and is an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. Why July? It marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society. People with disabilities deserve to live full, self- determined lives, just like everyone else. Yet discrimination persists for the 1 in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability. That’s why we spotlight inspiring stories in July and beyond that show what’s possible with inclusion. Disability Pride Month happens every July to mark the ADA’s anniversary, which was passed on July 26, 1990. The first celebration was a Disability Pride Day that took place in Boston in 1990. Chicago hosted the first Disability Pride Parade in 2004. Now there are events nationwide empowering people with disabilities to take pride in who they are. Here’s more about the history of Disability Pride Month and the story behind the flag." Read more HERE.
“10 Inclusive Summer Activities You'll Want to Do Right Away”
"When spring starts to wane, many of us get super excited for summer. We whip up a laundry list of things we want to do to make the most of the season. Then we get about one month in and… now what? Planning out intentionally-inclusive activities for the summer takes more than just creative thinking. It requires a true understanding of a child’s needs and preferences, as well as some initial reconnaissance. You may need to visit potential field trip locations, for example: Scanning environments to make sure they are free of barriers to physical access or participation, ensuring they aren’t overstimulating or stress-inducing, etc. It’s no wonder we’re inclined to plan a season’s worth of activities ahead of time! With plenty of summertime left ahead of us, you may need extra inspiration to pad out your itinerary. Don’t worry! We’re revisiting a few of our favorite activities and outings to recharge your creative batteries. Here’s what we have planned for the coming months." Read more HERE.
