Transracial Adoption and Racial Socialization

An Online Zoom Masterclass

Beginning April 21 , 2021 (Time: 12:00PM – 2:00PM GMT)

Led by distinguished clinician and justice, equity, diversity and inclusion leader, Judith Sadora (M.A., LMFT - left below), and award-winning historian and justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion leader, Matthew C. Whitaker, (Ph.D. - right below).

"The latest U.S. Census results are in: Interracial couples are making a significant contribution to the diversity of our society. Among opposite-sex married couples, one in 10 (5.4 million couples) are interracial, representing an increase of 28%% since 2000. In addition, 18% of heterosexual and 21% of gay and lesbian unmarried couples were of different races. But are helping professionals ready to deliver services to this growing population? Clinical approaches usually do not explicitly address intersections of race, gender, and class and hence do not capture the complex and changing nature of clients' social-psychological and political selves, or subjectivities." - Kyle D Killian Ph.D., LMFT

“Adolescents who do not have a stable racial identity show lower self-esteem. As such, it is vital for mixed race families to speak to their biracial or multiracial children about their mixed race and foster pride in their background.” - Astrea Greig

Masterclass Summary

Diamond Strategies and Triune Health & Wellness thank you for exploring "Intimacy in Interracial Relationships and Adoption," and 4-session "masterclass" devoted to historicizing, assessing and empowering interracial relationships, White (birth or adopted) parents of mixed roots children and adults, and Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), transracial adoptees and families. This effort is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to address myths, realities, issues and opportunities facing these ever-communities with clinical and social scientific expertise.

Clinicians, clients, parents, child welfare professionals, students, policy makers, community members, and advocates, are encouraged to attend. We at Diamond Strategies and Triune Health & Wellness, invite you and your circle to register today! In White Parents, Black Children: Experiencing Transracial Adoption, Dr. Darron T. Smith, argues “some people believe the U.S. may be entering a post-racial state where race no longer matters, citing evidence like the increasing number of transracial adoptions to make this point.” On the contrary, “racism remains a factor for many [children of color] with White parents. These children, often “raised in White homes, are not exempt from racism, and White parents are often naive about the experiences their children encounter.” This arrests identity formation, familial cohesion, ally building, and cultural affinity. Without affinity, these children often enter adulthood ill-prepared to thrive in a world that is far from “post-racial.”

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology argues “the number of mixed-race families in America is steadily increasing. However, despite changes in laws and evolving social attitudes, multiracial children still face significant challenges.” Interracial friends and couples who believe that "race doesn't matter," and "parents who believe they can raise their child color-blind are making a terrible mistake,” argues Editor-in-Chief of Healthcare Informatics, Mark Hagland, “look at the adult adoptees who have committed suicide, or who have substance abuse problems. Love was not enough for them.”

Interracial friends, couples, and White parents and their allies, need a safe space in which to discuss “racial socialization” with qualified, experienced professionals, so that [they and] their children of color are empowered to navigate a highly racialized world. We will share research, address current trends, offer instructive and inspirational stories, and draw a road map for [living and] rearing informed and well-adjusted children.
