Covey retired from teaching after almost forty years of service. She taught English, Reading, Government and History in Phoenix, Arizona, beginning in 1974 in the Phoenix Union High School District. In 1978, she began teaching in the Isaac School District, where she served for the remainder of her teaching career. Teaching and building bridges among students, teachers, counselors, and the surrounding community were her passions. For two of the years in the Isaac School District, she served Collaborative Peer Teacher, where she coached other teachers to raise test scores, and improve instructional techniques. Her specialty was teaching English as a Second Language. Covey earned a B.A. in Secondary Education with a specialization in English with a minor in Reading from Arizona State University (ASU), and an M.A. in Education, also from ASU. A “master teacher,” she served on The Arizona Governor’s Task Force on Gangs, The Governor’s Task Force on Corporal Punishment, and is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, An International Honor Society in Education, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
